St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Conditions Assessment Report

Description: In preparation for a master plan of the church's school, church, and parish offices, a conditions assessment was performed to evaluate code and ADA issues as well as possible structural constraints that might inhibit additions to the existing facilities. A full mechanical, plumbing, and electrical assessment was performed as well.
Role in the project: Performed full architectural evaluation of the existing facilities on the interior and exterior; coordinated assessments of structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical; and prepared the final report.
This is a Shaughnessy Fickel and Scott Architects, Inc. (SFS) project and Becca provided these services while under contract with SFS.

Little Sisters of the Poor

Client: Little Sisters of the Poor
Completion: 2000
Description: The 1980's retirement facility was in need of a conditions assessment to determine exterior maintenance needs and prioritize those needs.
Role in the project: Performed a conditions assessment for the exterior of the facility, determined needs, prepared report with priorities, and assisted with the first maintenance priority by getting bids from contractors, awarding the contract, and overseeing the work.

President Hotel Preservation Assessment
Kansas City, Missouri
Description: Served on the Historic Preservation "SWAT Team" committee in an effort to save the President Hotel from demolition by developing alternative uses for the building.
Role in the project: Served on the committee overseeing the work of a consultant to develop strategies to save the historic building. The building was subsequently saved from demolition and renovated.

Firestone Building Preservation Assessment

Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri Renovation

Client: Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri
Description: Site and interior improvements to the facility at 47th and Troost to develop design options in anticipation of hiring an architect to perform the improvements.
Role in the project: On a volunteer basis, developed designs based on programmatic needs and provided consultation on adjacent building listed on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places.

18th and Vine Master Plan
Kansas City, Missouri
Description: The City of Kansas City undertook the renovation of the historic 18th and Vine District to redevelop it into an entertainment and tourist destination. The master plan included planning for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the American Jazz Museum, renovation of the Gem Theater, a new Institute of Jazz, and residential development.
Role in the project: Served as staff and city representative to the design consultants on the project.

FOCUS Kansas City Comprehensive and Strategic Plan
Kansas City, Missouri
Description: Forging Our Comprehensive Urban Strategy (FOCUS) began in 1992 as a comprehensive and integrated plan to guide the future of Kansas City for the next 25 years. It was completed and adopted by the City Council in 1997.
Role in the project: Phase 1 - The Policy Plan. While employed by the city, developed graphics to illustrate various aspects of Kansas City for assessment of existing demographics, density, new construction, education facilities, public support services, and growth patterns. Served as an assistant facilitator for the women's focus group. The focus group included nightly public meetings for a group of about 20 volunteers who provided insight into the needs of women in Kansas City. Phase 2 - The Comprehensive and Strategic Plan. While no longer an employee of the city, volunteered as a citizen to further provide input and develop the plan.

Town of Kansas Archeology Master Plan
Kansas City, Missouri
Description: The original location of the Town of Kansas, the beginnings of Kansas City, was at risk of being forgotten. The Planning and Development Department started with property acquisition and an archaeological dig to determine the extent of remains from the original settlement and to plan the area's development for public education about the city's early days.
Role in the project: Served early on in the project start-up, including staff assistance to the department head in coordinating the archaeological dig and providing information to the consultant of the initial master plan.

Hospital Hill Master Plan

Description: The Hospital Hill area consists of Western Missouri Mental Health, Truman Medical Center, UMKC Dental School, and Children's Mercy Hospital. The city hired a consultant to prepare a master plan to address growth of the area and development needs.
Role in the project: Staff assistance providing coordination with consultant and assembling information, parking lot counts, and public meetings.

Urban Design Guidelines for Historic Preservation

Description: Developed guidelines to assist historic property owners with appropriate modifications to their homes.

Certificate of Appropriateness Staff Reports for the Landmarks Commission
Kansas City, Missouri
Description: When owners of properties that are listed in the Kansas City Register of Historic Places want to make alterations to their properties, they are required to apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness. The Landmarks Commission reviews the application and determines whether the alterations are in keeping with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.
Role in the project: Review of Certificate of Appropriateness applications, worked with homeowners, determination of compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, preparation of staff reports, presentation to Landmarks Commission, and follow-up paperwork. The monthly docket consisted of an average of eight cases.
