Johnson County Community College Horticultural Sciences Center

Johnson County Community College (JCCC) sought to expand its offerings in the horticultural sciences, and needed a new facility to support that growth. The new building, housing a classroom, laboratory, and greenhouses, combines the college's characteristic red brick with a farmhouse appearance while incorporating innovative features. Two large columns made of native limestone frame the main entrance and double as cisterns for storing rainwater collected from the roof through decorative scuppers carved by a local craftsman. The water is pumped to the gardens by a windmill preserved from the farmstead that originally stood on the site.
